Tips for your surgery abroad
Published on 02-09-2009     Print Version

  • Be clear and realistic about what you want to achieve from your surgery

Not only will it help your surgeon to know exactly what you want to achieve, it will also help you to be realistic about the results.

  • Do your research!

Make sure you thoroughly research the country you are travelling to, the surgeon and the hospital and make sure you feel happy with your findings.

  • Ask Questions

Ask your surgeon as many questions as you need to.  Don’t every worry about asking too many or bothering them – having any kind of surgery is a major decision and you should have no lingering questions or reservations.

  • Talk to Others

Talk to friends, family and others who have had either the same surgery as you or who have been for treatment abroad.  Internet forums are very useful for this.  By speaking to others you will gain useful tips and insights about what to expect and how to deal with recovery.

  • Plan

Plan every part of your trip, from airport transfers to an escort home from the hospital.  Think about whether you would like to take a close friend or family member with you for support.

  • Prepare

Think carefully about what you need to take with you both in terms of the usual ‘travel’ things as well as anything that will help you recover after surgery

  • Take care of yourself

In the weeks leading up to your surgery, take good care of yourself.  By making sure you are in the best of health it will help speed along your recovery.
